Glossary of Terms
A to D
Balanced count – Any counting system which has an exact balance between plus cards and minus cards. In such a systems, if the deck were counted down to the bottom, the resulting sum would be zero.
Blackjack – A card game in which players attempt to approach 21 but not exceed it. It is also best possible hand in the game made up of an Ace and another card valued 10, J, Q or K.
Bust – Having a total over 21, resulting in an automatic loss.
Bust card – It is the individual card which brings the hand’s total over 21.
Basic strategy – A collection of actions that will offer the highest return on investment when you know only your point total.
Cut card – A plastic card that serves to mark the point where the dealer will reshuffle the deck, or the shoe. Players are allowed to cut the deck or the shoe prior to dealing. It prevents the bottom card of the deck or shoe from being exposed during play.
Double or double down – After seeing a hand, the player can Double by placing an additional bet equal to his original bet. Subsequently he can draw only one additional card. This move may only be used on the first two cards.
E to I
Even money – When the dealer shows an ace and the player has a blackjack, the player can opt for even money and it is paid immediately. This is similar to a version of insurance, not a different bet. If the dealer has blackjack, the hand is a push, but the player receives two times the value of the insurance, which is the same as the original bet. If the dealer does not have blackjack, the player wins 1.5 times the value of the original bet. However they lose the value of the insurance, and still end up with the value of the original bet.
First base – The betting spot is located to the dealers left hand side. If is the first to receive cards and first to act.
Five card Charlie – Reaching five cards in one hand without busting. It is rare and casinos may offer a 2:1 bonus for achieving it.
Hard hand – Any hand that does not contain an ace presently being counted as 11. Put another way, there is a chance the player will bust on a hit.
Hit – Simply to ask for another card. Over 21 is bust as normal.
Hole card – The second card to be dealt to the dealer that is dealt face down. It is not revealed to players until after they have acted upon their hands.
Insurance – When the dealer shows an ace, the player can choose to place a side bet of half the value of the original bet. If the dealer has blackjack, the player gets his wager back plus the value of the original bet. If the dealer does not have blackjack, the player loses his wager.
N to Z
Natural – Receiving a sum of 21 on the first and second card. It is the same as blackjack and sometimes called it is called “natural 21”
Penetration – A number or fraction that represents how many cards/decks will be dealt before shuffling in contrast to the total number of cards/decks in play. It may be expressed in percentage form or as a fraction where the denominator is always the total number of decks in play such as “4.5/6” or “75% penetration”. In literature it may be abbreviated “PEN”
Pitch game – A blackjack game dealt from the hand of the dealer using only 1 or 2 decks.
Push – or a tie, the player and dealer have hands with the same total.
Shoe – A device used to hold multiple decks of cards typically 4,6 or 8 prior to the dealer removing them one card at a time to be used during play.
Shoe game – A blackjack game which is dealt from a shoe. Shoes can typically hold 4,5,6 or 8 decks.
Soft – A soft hand is a hand that includes an ace valued as 11, as opposed to 1.
Split – If a player is dealt two cards of the same rank, he can choose to play each of them separately. A side bet is put for each one.
Stand – To stop asking for more cards.
Stiff – Any hard hand where the possibility to exceed 21 exists by drawing an additional card namely 12,13,14,15 or 16
Surrender – To surrender is to abandon your hand, while recovering half of your initial bet.
Third base – The betting spot located on the dealer’s right which is last to act.
Upcard – The card that the dealer is showing.
Blackjack is played with an international 52-card deck with the jokers removed. Casinos will normally use several decks mixed together.
A device called a Shoe is used to speed up the game. It save reshuffling the hand every time. It also makes counting the cards remaining in play more difficult. Generally the casino will prefer to use more decks.
The game in a casino is played on a specially designed table. A dealer will be employed at the table and up to eight players can participate. The dealer will normally sit opposite the players. The players places the bets in from him.
Look out for locals rules which should be displayed at the table. Such as, Blackjack pays 3 to 2, dealer must draw on 16’s and stands only on 17’s.
Normally you can change your money with the dealer at the table.
The standard denominations for casino chips are:
- white chips = $1

- green chips = $25
- black chips = $100
